Smith machine exercises
A barbell trapped inside a steel frame so it can only travel straight up and down. A twist of the wrists hooks it at any height, so you can bail out of a heavy set with nobody spotting you. Halfway between a free barbell and a machine.
With Smith machine and nothing else, 8 of the 18 muscle groups can still be trained to a full session's target.
Smith machine loads these hardest: Quads, Calves, Chest, Mid-back / traps, Hamstrings.
Where to find it: A bar that looks caught inside a tall frame, with rows of hooks running up both uprights.
